Immersive Resilience
Seoul, South Korea, 2024
“ The placemaking aims to reconnect humans with true nature within one of the busiest amusement parks in Seoul ”
The project offers a 250m² lounge-like submerged space that aims to activate human senses and nurture a profound
re-connection with nature in an immersive 360-degree experience.
This 3-dimensional naturalistic garden, celebrating the perennial life cycle of herbaceous plants, envelops visitors, liberating
them from the artificial overload within Han River Park, one of Seoul’s busiest recreational areas.
The Immersive Resilience Garden is designed with a multi-layered, intimate space, inspired by the spatial structures and
interactions observed in the natural world. We have applied these principles into a human scale, interplaying with
the multi-year variations of perennials and grasses.
Through the continual change of colours, textures, and structures, this public garden stands as a testament to
urban coexistence, offering a serene exploration of the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature.

The Immersive Resilience by Studio ReBuild is
the architect and professor Changyeob Lee’s first built public realm project in
Seoul, S Korea and integrated
3-dimensional multi-layered experience incorporating with a naturalistic garden.
3-dimensional multi-layered experience incorporating with a naturalistic garden.
A garden in the form of cascaded liberates visitors from all artificial overload,
providing a spatial structure that connects seamlessly with nature in 360 degrees.
The project is not just about creating a public space; it is about crafting an engaging environment for contemplation and reconnecting with nature.
Spanning 400 meters and across five layers, the design aims to blend nature and artificiality seamlessly with the existing land.
Located in the heart of the mega-city Seoul, this natural garden is open and accessible to everyone at any time and during any season.
The garden consists of three tiers, each planted with a different group of plants: the tall A group, the mid-level B group, and the low-lying C group.
The large plants arranged along the garden's perimeter will gradually grow to human height over time.
The life cycle of perennial herbs is respected, showing the garden's transformation into a deeper and lusher appearance as seasons pass.
This project was selected and built in accordance with the 2024 International Garden Exhibition organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government through an international competition. The project will remain in existence even after the event.
The project actively utilized computational design to improve the buildability of the irregular forms.
Curves were meticulously optimized and segmented using computing to minimize material wastage within the confines of standard metal sheet sizes.
Approximately 400 bespoke metal units were managed with individual part IDs and were cut to fit custom joints, allowing for easy assembly and welding in a factory environment.
Prefabricated in 5-meter lengths(Mega Frame Approach) for efficient transportation, our approach minimized on-site labour requirements.
The Immersive Resilience garden aims to be more than just a static landscape. The project seeks to create an environment that provides guidance for plants to thrive in a three-dimensional space.
Spanning 400 meters and across five layers, the design aims to blend nature and artificiality seamlessly with the existing land.
This garden not only invites admiration, but also encourages people to enter, explore, and interact with the natural world. It offers an immersive experience of resilience that captivates visitors and makes them want to linger.
Furthermore, as the plants grow, people within this garden will experience a sense of being more enclosed by nature all around, with only the sky open above.
